Positive Habits to Take into 2021

2020 was… not the greatest. It’s hard to find the words to describe it - A dumpster fire maybe? To leave all of that negative energy behind, I’ve made a list of all the positive habits we can continue (or start!) in 2021. This list has everything from mental health to skin care, so there should be a little something for everyone!

  1. Journaling
    1. I know journaling every day is easier said than done, but I’ve found that even if you find time a couple days a week to sit down with yourself and reflect, it becomes A LOT easier to find peace in all the crazy. Here are a few journaling ideas in case you aren’t into the whole “dear diary” thing –
      1. A mood tracker
        1. If you only have a few minutes to journal every day, a mood tracker is a super quick and easy idea. By tracking your moods, you can look back and remind yourself of all the good days when you start to feel like you’re drowning in the stress and anxiety.
      2. A list of “things to look forward to”
        1. I always try to have a running list of things to be excited for. Without this list I tend to feel stagnant. My list sometimes has big things like a vacation, but it can also be something as small as a recipe you’re excited to try or a show you’re excited to watch. The monotony of quarantine has made it harder to find things to be excited for, but in 2021 we can start making an active effort to find joy in the little things!
      3. 5 senses gratitude list
        1. You've read “make a gratitude list” on just about every self-help article everywhere, but focusing your gratitude list a little bit can help it seem less repetitive. The way I focus my gratitude list is by paying attention to each of my senses. For example, something I’m grateful to be able to feel is my comfy bed at the end of the day. I’m grateful to see my family even if we’re wearing masks. And the list goes on and on! Focusing on specific feelings helps me get a list started when I’m feeling blocked.
    1. Spending time with yourself (Be your own friend!)
      1. This may sound a little bit depressing at first for our extroverts out there, but something I learned recently is there is a lot of value in sitting down with yourself and listening to your body. Recognize where you’re feeling sore, any negative thoughts you’re having a hard time shaking, or even just take the time to notice if you’ve eaten enough to satisfy your body today. It might feel a little weird to try and do this for the first time, but once you get comfortable with it, it will be easy to make a habit! I always feel so much better after I take the time to listen to what my body has to tell me.
    2. Setting boundaries
      1. This is something I struggled with immensely in 2020, and I really want to change that in this new year. I once had someone tell me that our energy is like a water bottle that gets filled every day. Throughout the day, we give water from our bottle to others every time we interact with them. In order to make sure we’re never running on empty, we have to surround ourselves with people that fill us up with positive energy. Sometimes this means setting boundaries with people that make us feel emotionally drained. It is perfectly okay to tell someone you don’t have the emotional capacity to help them. It’s not always easy, but you deserve to feel full just as much as they do. Other kinds of boundaries you might have to set could involve watching the news or using social media. I know this one has definitely been big for me. All the negativity on the news can be so exhausting. Shutting it off sometimes doesn’t mean you will be politically ignorant. It just means you’re taking care of yourself!
    3. Wear more of what makes YOU confident
      1. Since quarantine started, I had been wearing sweats almost every day. As someone that loves fashion, I started to realize it was starting to affect my mental health. I wasn’t wearing clothes that felt like ME. For me, fixing this problem was as simple as upgrading to cute loungewear and investing in jeans that feel like yoga pants. Feeling confident doesn’t mean you have to get dressed up, but it’s also good to remember that you can get dressed up even if you have nowhere to go. And with quarantine forcing most of us to do our shopping online, it’s even easier to shop small!
    4. Skincare
      1. In 2020, I was BAD to my skin. Seriously bad. Not going anywhere tomorrow? Sleep in my current makeup! Not leaving the house? No shower! I noticed when my skin started to get worse that my confidence suffered too. And this is something totally preventable! Even if you don’t always have perfectly clear skin (because who does?), it still makes you feel so much better to spend a little time taking care of yourself.
    5. Celebrate ALL of your wins
      1. This is so important. During quarantine, I know a lot of us struggled with feeling like we weren’t doing enough. But in reality, that wasn’t the case at all! Our successes, big or small, are always worth celebrating. Lately, I’ve been rewarding myself for getting a good night’s sleep. Sounds simple right? Well I have always struggled with getting enough sleep, and it definitely makes me feel lazier the next day. Since the new year started, I’ve been making an effort to get to bed earlier and wake up early every day. I’m not always able to do it, but every time that I am able, I make sure to celebrate! I obviously don’t throw myself a party every time I’m able to sleep for eight hours (although that would be fun), but I’ll do a simple thing for myself like order some breakfast to be delivered or pick up an iced coffee. Rewarding all of your successes is a MUST in 2021.


    2020 wasn’t great. I think we can all agree on that, but the power to have a healthy mind and body in the new year is in your hands! It may not be easy. There will always be challenges, but the great thing about selfcare is that no one can take it away from you. Here’s to a great new year! Here’s to all you bad ass womxn!
