Feminist Feature: Gigi Engle, Sex Coach, Educator & Writer
Introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about yourself, what you do and how you got there!
I'm Gigi Engle, a certified sex coach, educator and writer. I write for lots of different publications including Brides, Elle, Men's Health, SELF, Teen Vogue and many others. I'm the sex columnist for Brides magazine, so that's where I do most of my work these days. I also write an advice column called Ask Gigi and helped found the sex education site, Your Sexual PSA with The Alexander Institute, where I serve as the resident sex educator.
I started out at Elite Daily, where I wrote most of the sex content before moving on to freelance work and into the educational space. I joined a sex education program called SCU to gain certification in coaching and education with The World Association of Sex Coaches.
You are a certified sex coach and educator - talk to us about the classes you teach and maybe a few factoids!
I teach a wide variety of workshops both live and online. I do a lot of focus on sexual wellness as well as anatomy. Most of my interactive workshops are taught on O.School, a gender-inclusive sex education platform where I serve as an educator. Some of my more popular classes include: Mapping Your G-Spot, All About Anal, and Everything You Need to Know About Lube.
Talk to us about the sex positivity movement - do you have recommendations on how women can explore pleasure and experimentation?
I think masturbation is really the ultimate form of self-care. It's so good for your mind, body, and spirit connection. Make an evening of it. Take a hot bath, play some Lana Del Rey and lean into it. Give yourself permission to seduce yourself and enjoy your body. Your confidence comes from within and I think that is very rooted in your sexuality.
What should be in every woman's sex toy drawer?
Every woman should have a wand vibrator and her favorite lube at the very least! I also recommend having condoms, post-sex cleanup wipes (i love the ones from Sustain Natural), and some light bondage gear, if she's into that.
What is your favorite female founded or run company?
It's so hard to pick because I have so many. Sustain, Unbound, Private Packs, and Dame have done so much to open up sexuality for women and make incredibly well-made products. I'd say my favorite is Dame because I feel like I've been following them since the very beginning of their foundation and it's just so fabulous to see how far they've come and how much they've revolutionized the sex tech space.
What is your protest slogan?
The Pussy Grabs Back
What does Feminism, and/or being a Feminist mean to you?
This is such a complex, multi-layered question that I'd need a whole book to flesh it out. But I guess what it really means to me is equality for women and the end of a patriarchal system that has held us down since, well, forever. Women are so fucking amazing. Sometimes it blows my mind. We deserve a voice and we're taking the power. It's a beautiful revolution.
